I am like a kid in a candy store with this place! I start swaying back and forth with a huge smile on my face, eyeing the menu of flavors for the day, trying to determine how many scoops I can eat before it starts melting down to my elbow. I don’t care how late, or tired I am, I stop. When I come home to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, my first stop is Kopp’s. And to those who know what I am speaking of, I know you are smiling right now. I wrote a children’s book inspired by this ritual called One Grillie, coming out early 2023.Īfter ordering, we stood next to the Claes Oldenburg cherry and spoon statue waiting for our turn. If you’ve ever ordered a grilled cheese at Kopp’s you’re familiar with the shoutout “one grillie!” from the cashier to the cooks as a heads up for an item that takes a couple extra minutes. I rarely veer off from ordering a cheeseburger unless it’s for a grilled cheese. It might be the hottest day of the year, but Kopp’s was on our agenda.
